Looking for ways of reducing our county`s carbon footprint, Environment Haliburton! held a forum in 2010 to discuss transportation alternatives to private car ownership. A small group, Rural Transportation Options (RTO), formed and carried out several research projects. Research reports can be accessed through U-Links and the Haliburton County Collection.
Building on our research, the experiences of other rural communities and our local culture, RTO determined the best start to providing transportation options in the county would be to formalize ridesharing through a website.
Haliburtonrideshare.ca is an initiative of the Rural Transportation Options committee, now a Part of the Halibuton County Community Cooperative with representation from Communities in Action, the Canadian Association for Retired Persons, Ontario Healthy Communities Coalition and individuals with an interest in tackling the transportation dilemma in rural communities.
Many thanks to Haliburton County Development Corporation and the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit for their support.
